University of Glasgow information: Irvine Paterson was born on the 22nd November 1897 at 179 Dalmarnock Road, Glasgow, Lanarkshire. His father was William Paterson, Herb Dealer, and his mother, Agnes Paterson (nee McLaren), who had married on the 19th June 1885 in Bridgeton, Glasgow. Aged 17, Irvine came to the University of Glasgow in 1915 to study Medicine. During his first year he took Anatomy, Chemistry and Zoology.
Irvine did not stay at University, instead he joined the Royal Engineers. He was in the 2nd Special Company, meaning that he dealt with poison gas. On the 19th April 1917, aged just 19, Pioneer Irvine Paterson was killed in France. He is buried the the British Philosophe Cemetery, Mazingarbe, Pas de Calais, France.

Newspaper transcript – Pioneer I. Paterson, Rutherglen. Mr and Mrs Paterson, 8 Buchanan Drive, Rutherglen, have received official intimation that their son, Pioneer Irvine Paterson, Royal Engineers, was killed. Prior to joining the Army he was a medical student at Glasgow University, and had just passed his examination with honours.
