Newspaper transcript – Mr and Mrs Thos. Brown, 194 Mill Street, Rutherglen, have received official intimation of the death of their only son, Private James Brown, Scottish Rifles, who was killed in action of July 20, 1916. Before enlisting he was employed as a clerk with the Royals Scottish Insurance Co., Glasgow.

Also commemorated on the Memorial at St Johns Operative Lodge No 347, Rutherglen and the family headstone in Rutherglen Cemetery.

Headstone reads – Erected by Thomas & Margaret Brown in Loving Memory of their only son Rifleman James Brown 5th Scottish Rifles killed in action in France 20th July 1916, aged 29 years.

*The age on the CWGC is incorrect as James was 29 years old at the time of his death.
