Glasgow University information: John Campbell Sinclair was born on the 14th March 1895 at 55 Oswald Street, Bridgeton, Glasgow, Lanarkshire. One of five children born to Hugh White Sinclair (1869-1936) and Margaret Morton Sinclair (nee Campbell) (1872-1934), who had married on the 29th January 1892 in Calton, Glasgow. As with many families, his family moved as their circumstances changed and by 1901 they were living in Bridgeton with the father working as a Yarn Warper. By 1916, the family were in Watson Avenue, Rutherglen, Lanarkshire. John was enrolled as a student but did not complete any courses before he was called to fight.
John enlisted as a Private in the 8th Bn. Seaforth Highlanders, and was killed in the attack in which Guemappe, 8 kilometres south east of Arras, was captured from the German Army. Private John Campbell Sinclair died on the 23rd April 1917, aged 22.
