Newspaper transcript – Rutherglen Officer Killed. Councillor Charles Crofts, 219 Main Street, Cambuslang, has been informed that his nephew, Lieutenant William Crofts, Lancashire Fusiliers, attached to the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, was killed in action on December 5. Lieutenant Crofts was the eldest son of Mr and Mrs James Crofts, 32 Park Avenue, Manchester, and was a native of Rutherglen, being a grandson of William Crofts, Belmont, Rutherglen. He was trained for the teaching profession, and prior to joining the Army on the outbreak of war had received an appointment in Manchester. He received a commission in 1916, and had experienced considerable fighting. He was 24 years of age.
